Description – Engineering: Senior Network Engineer

This position is primarily a “hands-on” engineering role. The candidate hired for this position will be a Senior Network Engineer focused on designing and deploying solutions based primarily on Cisco technologies for a number of clients.

The primary responsibilities will be to provide design, consulting, implementation and support services to the company’s customers. In this role the majority of the work time will be in a Professional Services capacity, but some pre-sales engineering will also be required. The engineer in this position will partner with designated members of the Company’s consulting and engineering teams, but will also operate with a high degree of independence.


  • Provide technical leadership, support, service and training to company’s customers
  • Be a customer technical liaison for Company’s technical support and development teams
  • Efficiently deliver high quality Cisco-focused services to customers
  • Collaborate with Practice Directors and field engineers to insure efficiency and success in providing timely and effective customer support and service solutions


  • Implement and support route/switch/security solutions for clients based on best practices
  • Perform network readiness and current state assessments
  • Occasionally provide technical pre-sales support for sales team that is responsible for prospecting, qualifying, and selling voice and data networking solutions
  • Apply expert knowledge of Cisco technologies to designs and implementation of customer networks
  • Meet customer and internal deadlines for deliverables
  • Create and implement troubleshooting and problem resolution plans as needed
  • Study and learn new products, protocols, and networking technology
  • Lead projects assigned by management as requested
  • Mentor other engineers
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Executive and/or technical-level communications
    • Relationship building to gain credibility and trust of internal and external customers
  • Consult, assess and/or audit, design and interview customers to determine highly technical requirements
  • Convert requirements into actionable scope of work
  • Coordinate proof of concept testing
  • Provide knowledge transfer to the customer
  • Perform analysis of the networking problems as well as provide highest-level crisis management
  • Ensure familiarity with customer network planning, implementation, support processes and procedures
  • Provide recommendations on viability, implementation strategies and optimal implementation of Company’s solutions
  • Demonstrate expert level knowledge of network topologies and conditions and ensure changes to network topologies are made with minimal down-time
  • Engineer, configure and lead the design, configuration and deployment of data networks including:
    • LAN, WAN and WLAN, Windows Servers
    • MS Exchange
    • Cisco routers, switches
    • SANs, load balancers and other network infrastructure devices
  • Assist clients with the day-today maintenance of voice and data network infrastructure including:
    • LAN, WLAN, WAN, WiFi, VOIP and NICs.
  • Serve as senior resource for trouble tickets and work orders for related network infrastructure devices
  • Review data monitoring stats and confirm SLAs with carriers are being obtained
  • Review network utilization statistics to verify that circuits are properly sized and take a proactive approach in provisioning bandwidth to meet needs or determine more analysis is required to determine types of bandwidth usage
  • Provide regular status reports on tasks accomplished, current issues and progress toward goals
  • Apply business development skills to identify potential sales leads and opportunities and communicate discovered opportunities to the regional sales team

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related Cisco route/switch design / implementation experience including:
    • Cisco routers/switches – 6500, 3700, 2800, 4500, etc.
    • Cisco ASA firewalls and security appliances
    • MPLS, BGP, EIGRP and other protocols
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience in network environments, including network engineering (hardware and software), network security practices and designing, planning and implementing LANs and WANs
  • Excellent problem solving, debugging/troubleshooting skills are required
  • Excellent verbal communications and written documentation skills are required
  • Mid-Market and/or Enterprise experience
  • This is a senior level consulting engineer – candidate must have the experience to not only develop and implement technology solutions, but be able to serve as a technical leader/trusted advisor for our clients
  • Expert-level experience in relevant fields of network engineering and implementation
  • Excellent network technical skills
  • Good working knowledge of competitive equipment and experience with a channel partners, large enterprise, universities, service operator (carrier), third party network consulting services companies or other relevant industry servicers.
  • Possess expert-level knowledge (or the aptitude to acquire knowledge) of Company’s products,
    capabilities, functions and configurations.
  • At least 3 years of experience and extensive knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, LAN/WAN topologies, WiFi, WAP, firewalls, routers, switches, hubs, VPN, IPSec, DHCP, DNS, WINS, SNMP, network monitors, protocol analyzers, Windows 2003/2000/NT, Cisco IOS and PIX/ASA

Desired Skills:

  • Experience installing and supporting security, Storage Area Networks (SAN) and VMWare/Citrix is a plus
  • Experience working as a consultant is a significant plus
  • Knowledge and applied work experience in one or more of the following: managed networks, cloud computing, unified communications, storage, virtualization, wireless, security, mobility and professional services
  • Knowledge and applied work experience with applied work experience in the design of distributed, high availability network infrastructures, including servers, switches, routers, and storage
  • Knowledge and applied work experience in the configuration and support of VMware and Microsoft Exchange
  • knowledge of Cisco, EMC, VMWare, Microsoft, NetApp, Fortinet and Juniper Networks

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience with Cisco Professional level certification is preferred
  • CCNP or CCDP certification preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Candidate should also be interested in pursuing additional certifications as part of their professional development plan
  • Understanding of best practice implementation methodologies, following the Cisco Solution Reference Network Design guidelines as well as the Prepare, Plan, Design, Implement, Operate, and Optimize (PPDIOO) implementation framework
  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a network engineer, solutions engineer, data center engineer, or related operational engineering role
